How to Disable Integrated Graphics Card

There are two methods to disable an integrated graphics card: through Windows using Add or Remove Programs and Device Manager (or another operating system’s similar functions) or through the computer’s basic input-output system (BIOS).

How to disable integrated onboard graphic card

Method 1. How to disable onboard graphics in Windows

1. Press Windows Key + R then type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box. Click OK to open Device Manager.

2. Locate “Display Adapters” on the list of computer peripherals and choose your graphics card.

Note: If you’ve already installed the new card, make sure you don’t select that one.

3. Right-click on the integrated graphics card and click “Disable” from the menu. A pop-up will pop up to warn you that doing this will stop the card from functioning. Click Yes.

How to disable onboard graphics in Windows

Now, navigate to “Add or Remove Programs” and search for any old video software or drivers. Remove these programs to prevent any other conflicts between graphics cards. (Find the brand of the old integrated graphics card, which was likely NVIDIA, Intel, or ATI).

Method 2. How to disable onboard graphics in BIOS

Note: Not every BIOS has the option to turn an installed integrated graphics card off.

1. Restart your computer and enter the “BIOS” or “Setup” settings. To do that, press the BIOS key as the system is about to start. On most computers, the BIOS key is displayed on the boot screen, saying “Press __ to enter Setup”. Commonly, the BIOS keys are F1, F2, F10, or Delete.

2. Now you should be in a blue screened selections menu, go the BIOS menus and find a setting labeled “VGA“, “integrated video” or “onboard“. You can find it in the Integrated Peripherals section, but it could be in another of the menu options depending upon the BIOS manufacturer.

3. Change the integrated graphics setting to “off” or “disabled” by pressing Enter to cycle through the options.

4. Go to the Exit section and select to Exit Saving Changes.
