Fallout 4 is an amazing game, but many Windows 10 users have reported problems with it. This tutorial will discuss “Fallout 4 not launching” issue in Windows 10. If Fallout 4 is not launching properly from Steam, the screen goes black, sometimes a little loading circle pops up and nothing happens as it attempts to load or it plays the music but there’s screen. How to Fix Fallout 4 Not Launching / Black Screen / Crashing Problem on Windows 10
Method 1. Update your display drivers
If Fallout 4 doesn’t start on Windows 10, you should be able to update your display drivers. Before you start, I highly recommended you download Display Driver Uninstaller (also known as DDU) from this link.
When the download is completed, you can start the process of driver updates.
Step 1. Run DDU to uninstall your display drivers.
Step 2. Wait until the uninstall process is completed. Then you can visit your graphic card manufacturer’s website and download the latest drivers for your graphic card.
Step 3. Then you just install the drivers on your system.
Step 4. Lastly, restart your computer and check if the problem has resolved.
I highly recommend you use this driver updater tool to automatically download all the outdated drivers on your computer.
If Fallout 4 still not launching, you can try method 2.
Method 2. Run the game in compatibility mode
Step 1. Open Steam and find Fallout 4. Right click it and select Properties.
Step 2. Go to Local files tab then click Verify Integrity of Game Cache button.
Step 3. Then you back to Local Files tab and select Browse Local Files.
Step 4. Now you locate Fallout4.exe then right click it and click Properties
Step 5. Switch to Compatibility tab, you select Run this software in compatibility mode for and select Windows 7 from the list.
Step 6. Next, you need to check Run as Administrator checkbox as well.
Step 7. Click Apply > OK to save the changes.
Repeat steps 4-7 for Fallout4Launcher.exe
Method 3. Change the Fallout4Prefs.ini
Many Windows 10 users have reported that Fallout 4 does not run in full-screen mode but, the game runs great in windowed mode. In order to fix this, you need to make some changes to the file name Fallout4Prefs.ini
Step 1. First, you open File Explorer and navigate to:
Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\ Fallout 4
Step 2. Find file Fallout4Prefs.ini then open it by using Notepad.
Step 3. Now, you look for the following variables and change them to these values:
- bMaximizeWindow=0
bBorderless=1
bFull Screen=0
iSize H=1080
iSize W=1920 - Then you replace iSize H and iSize W with the current screen resolution that you’re using.
- Save the changes.
Step 4. You will now be able to run Fallout 4 perfectly in full-screen mode.
