FIX: “OneDrive cannot connect to Windows” Error

Many Windows 10 users may receive this error while connecting to online-only files. Following error message occurs to them while accessing files:

Files On-Demand requires a connection to Windows in order to show your files without taking up space on this device. OneDrive can keep trying to connect to Windows or you can choose to download all your files. You won’t be able to use online-only files until this is fixed.

Microsoft says this problem appears when Windows Cloud Filter Driver (cldflt.sys) is not running. To deal with it, make sure that cldflt.sys driver is running. If it is not running, you need to enabled it and get fixed up. Here are the steps:

How to fix “OneDrive Cannot Connect to Windows” error on Windows 10 when accessing Files On-Demand

1. Open a Command Prompt with administrator privilege. You can search for “cmd“, right-click on the result, and click “Run as administrator“.

2. In administrative Command Prompt window, type/paste the following command and press Enter key.

cd %systemroot%\system32\drivers

3. Moving on, run the following command to determine whether cldflt.sys driver is running

sc query cldflt

4. If the results includes STATE as 4, it indicates cldflt.sys driver is running. If not, you need to enble it by running this command:

sc config cldflt start=auto

5. Close Command Prompt and then restart your computer to get this issue fixed.

If the problem still persists, it might be possible Windows Cloud Filter Driver is not attached to sync drive, where your files are located. To resolve it, start command prompt as Administrator and type following:

reg query “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Data” /v 41960B29A3BC0C75

If the output is empty, you need to navigate to registry location and then create this entry. In case, if output is anything else than REG_BINARY 0100000001000000, type following in Command Prompt window:

Fltmc attach cldflt C:

Note: substitute C: is the drive where the OneDrive folder is located
