FIX: Language Bar Missing from Taskbar in Windows 10

If your language bar has disappeared from the taskbar after upgrading Windows to a newer version or after a Windows update, here’s how to fix.

The language bar in the Taskbar (notification area) is an important feature for any user who uses more than one language for typing, where they can change the input language of a keyboard just by adjusting the settings from the Taskbar. But at times the Language bar can be missing in the taskbar due to some registry errors or due to some corrupted files on your drive.

If you are getting this problem on your Windows 10 PC, don’t panic, this article will show you how to fix it.

How To Fix Language Bar Missing from Taskbar in Windows 10

FIX 1. General Suggestions

1. If you are encountering this problem for the first time on your Windows PC, reboot your system and after restarting check if that makes the problem go away.

2. Check if any Windows Update is pending or not.

If above suggesions didn’t helped, refer FIX 2 below.

FIX 2. Enable Language bar from Settings

Here are the steps to enable the language bar manually from the Settings menu on your Windows 10 PC.

1. Click on the search box and type “language bar” and then select “Use the desktop language bar when it’s available“.

2. In the Settings window, select the checkbox for “Use the desktop language bar when it’s available” under Switching input methods.

3. Then click on “Language bar options“.

4. After that, the Text Services and Input Languages settings box will appear. Select either “Docked in the taskbar” or “Floating On Desktop” option and also check the settings “Show additional Language bar icons in the taskbar” and “Show text labels on the Language bar“. Click on Apply > OK to save the settings.

3. Close Settings window and check on the desktop if you can see the language bar.

FIX 3. Re-enable Language bar using Registry Editor

Here are the steps to re-enable the Language bar by adding value to the registry in the Registry Editor:

We would recommend you to create System Restore point before editing registry.

1. Click Start, type “Run” and select Run. In the Run box, type “regedit” and click OK.

2. In the left pane of Registry Editor window, go to this location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

3. Right-Click on blank space in the right windowpane and select String Value under New.

4. That will create a new file named New Value #1 and you can rename it as “CTFMON“. Double click on it.

5. Type the following path under the option “Value Data:“.

C:\Windows\System32\ctfmon.exe

6. Click OK, and restart your system to check if the language bar is visible on the taskbar.

FIX 4. Remove/Add a Language

Many Windows users have complained that removing and adding their preferred secondary languages did the trick. Here are the steps:

1. First, open Settings by pressing the Windows key + I shortcut.

2. Select Time & Language.

3. Under Language, you can uninstall a Language pack by clicking on its name and clicking Remove option. Keep your primary language as it is and remove secondary languages — all of them.

4. To add a language back, click on Add a preferred language on the same screen, find your preferred language. Click on Next.

5. In the next screen, you can choose whether you want the language for display only or for speech and handwriting too. Click on Install.

FIX 5. Perform SFC Scan

At times some corrupt files or system errors on the hard drive can disappear the Language bar from the Taskbar. To check for the corrupt Windows files and system run an SFC scan along with check disk.

1. Start Command Prompt as Administrator.

2. In the Command Prompt window, type ”sfc /scannow” press Enter. It might take quite a while to finish.
